Figuring Out Your Life: DePaul Style

A lot of students don't know what they want to do with their life when they go into college (and don't worry, that's totally okay). DePaul recognizes this and they offer a lot of programs that help students figure out what exactly it is they want to do as a career.

First of all, DePaul has an amazing office that I've talked about before: the Career Center. The Career Center is designed specifically for what it is named - to help students in the aspects of their career or jobs during their time at DePaul. The Career Center helps students find jobs on-campus and off-campus by providing a database telling what jobs are available and how to apply. They will further their assistance by helping create or critique a resume, write a job-specific cover letter, and/or prepare the student for an interview process. The Career Center is not only in charge of jobs but they are also in charge of internships. Since we are in the great city of Chicago, internships come in droves. The Career Center is there with another database full of available internships and the same services to help the student land the internship.

Additionally, DePaul even offers classes that help you figure out what you want to do with your life. Currently, I am taking UIP 240 "Career Pathways," which is a class designed to explore your personality traits, values, and other ways to help the student realize their career passions. In this class, we do a variety of activities that are practical but sometimes are abstract. For example, just recently our professor Mr. Morales showed us a website that allows you to answer a series of questions (about 100-200 questions) that will then match you up to careers based on your answers. The website name is called Sokanu. It's a free service so you can click the link and go test it yourself. I swear by this service because my Top 5 were spot on: lawyer, judge, paralegal, arbitrator, and judicial law clerk. All of these are spot on with exactly what I want to do with my professional career.

Needless to say, if you are coming to DePaul and you have no idea what you want to do with your life, there is no need to worry. DePaul has so many services available to you that you will figure it out in time if you take advantage of them.

I will leave you all with a little present that I have not given in a long time. Ladies and gentlemen, vintage Stefani Germanotta...better known as Lady Gaga.
